CANDLE CARE TIPS
INITIAL BURN
For a candle to have a happy life it is crucial that the candle is permitted to burn for 3 to 4 hours for the initial sitting. If the candle is not allowed to burn for an adequate time on the first burn the likelihood of “tunnelling” occurring is high. Tunnelling is industry jargon for when a candle burns unevenly and a “tunnel” forms down the centre of the candle leaving an abundance of wax on the outer edges of the candle. A candle will carry with it a wax memory meaning that there will be a ring of unmelted wax visible between burns if the surface is not allowed to melt fully with each sitting. Broadly speaking, a candle should be allowed to burn for an hour per inch of the diameter of the container. As our containers taper slightly towards the bottom of the glass we advise HEROWN candles should be allowed to burn for 3-4 hours on the initial burn, ca. 2 hours for the top 3/4 of the candle and reducing burn time in-line with the visible full-melt of the wax as the wax level drops with use (this should be around 1 and a half hours towards the bottom).
Allowing the candle to burn properly on the first sitting will also maximise the scent throw.
TRIMMING
It is advisable to keep the candle wick trimmed to ca. 5mm. Between uses, trim the wick before burning. Keeping the wick trimmed enhances the burn performance by producing a safer, smaller flame more consistent flame with less soot. Wicks that are too long will produce more soot and smoke. All candles produce a level of soot and smoke. If your candle produces a lot of soot and or is smoking, trim the wick. The length of the wick can have a direct effect on the burn rate too - the longer the wick the quicker the burn!
SAFE CANDLE USE
The safety of our customers and their home environments is of the upmost importance to HEROWN, please read the instructions accompanying each HEROWN candle. We have complied a little list to help with safe burning below. Naturally we cannot advise for all circumstances, the user is responsible for the safe burning of their candle. The below is a guide but is by no means exhaustive. In short, use common sense, in doubt - shout for help hello@herownstore.com
Never leave a burning candle unattended.
Do not set candles in a draft or near any other heat source.
Burn out of reach of children and pets.
Do not burn candles close together: always leave ca. 15cm between burning candles.
Do not burn candles on or near anything that can catch fire.
Candles should be used on fire/ heat resistant surfaces. Please be aware of the surface that you have placed a burning candle or hot container upon. Surfaces should be protected.
Discontinue use once the depth of the melt-pool is ca. 1.2 inch. On average, it takes approximately 2 to 3 hours for a candle to reach this point. Do not burn for longer.
If your candle produces black smoke, trim the wick and ensure the wick is clean and intact. All candles produce soot and smoke.
It is not advisable to extinguish candles by blowing on them. A suitable dish or candle snuffer should be used.
Ensure there is enough wax remaining before burning. We advise against burning a candle with less than 5cm of wax.
Make sure the candle wax is free from debris such as pieces of wick and matchsticks.
Keep candle wicks trimmed to ca. 5mm before each burn. A trimmed wick will produce a safer, smaller wick with less soot.
Should the wick need centring, do this when extinguished and whilst the wax is still molten. Do not use fingers. Find a suitable utensil. Molten wax will be hot.
Keep the tops of your candle clean and dust free by wiping with a damp lint-free cloth.
If candles are left exposed, allow the candle to adjust to room temperature before burning.
When not in active use, store your candle in a cool, dry area free from direct heat and light. Doing so will protect the wax and fragrance avoiding the wax from cracking or melting.
If in any doubt, do not use. Contact the brand in question for support before using your candle. If that is HEROWN then email us hello@herownstore.com
